このイラク戦の会場は4万人以上を収容する高陽スタジアムだったのですが、スタンドはまさに閑古鳥。U-17W杯で訪れた時もそれなりに空席はあったのですが、その比ではありませんでした。まさにガラガラ。日本とイラクの応援団が熱心に声を出していたのですが、それが余計に「他に誰もいない感」を助長していたくらいでした。
アジア大会の「日本ｖｓイラク」に他国の人が興味を持つのは確かに難しいのでしょうけれど、もう一つ別の理由もありました。同日同時刻キックオフでアジア大会の「韓国vsサウジアラビア」の試合があったのです。それは韓国人の熱心なサッカーファンならそちらを見るだろうという話で、実際に記者席で私の前に座っていた韓国人記者もPCで韓国戦を観戦していました。気持ちは分かります。
アジア大会は運営面で「ゆるい」大会だとは聞いていたのですが、確かに色々と適当です。プレスキットと言われるメディアに配られるグッズがあるのですが（会場案内とか地図とか粗品とかが入っているリュックサック）、その中身も人によって違ったりして、「福袋じゃないんだから」という……。
選手村が酷いというセンセーショナルな報道もチラホラ出ていますが、これはもう「そういう大会なんだ」と思うしかないのかな、と。五輪を模した大会ではあるものの、決して五輪ではないのです。選手村に強制宿泊ではないので、嫌なら宿を変えればいいという話。実際に、競技によっては選手村の外に宿を構えていますからね。資金のあるサッカーがあえてそれをしないのは、「それも経験」と考えているからでしょう。
イラクなんて初戦に15人（登録は20人）しか選手がそろわず、日本戦も18人で試合をしていたわけで、そういった国に比べればやはり日本の「準備力」は確かです。あえて快適な環境を選ばなかったのも、リオ五輪へ向けてこの世代を鍛え直すための手段。そう思っていたほうが健全だと思います。植田直通の言葉を借りれば、「整っていないのがアジア」なわけですし、これから彼らが戦うであろう五輪予選やACL、A代表でのW杯予選やアジアカップなどを見据えても、これは「シミュレーション」であり、「投資」であると思うのが得策ではないでしょうか。
