ACLの出場枠減少の懸念は以前から出ていたものです。成績準拠で枠を算出されると苦しくなるであろうことも想定内。枠が削られるだけなら「仕方ない」「増えるように頑張っていこう」という話で終わるところでしょう。
ただ、そうならないのは、「ACL本大会へストレートインで出場するチームが現状の『4』から『3』ないし『2』に減る」ことに加えて、「減った『2』（あるいは『1』）の分は、プレーオフに回るという規定になりそうなことです。『2』の場合はリーグ優勝クラブと天皇杯優勝クラブがストレートイン、リーグ戦2位と3位のクラブがプレーオフという形になると思われます。
欧州CLを模した大会であるACLですが、これもそれに倣う形と言えるかもしれません。ACL出場権を懸けたプレーオフは以前にも開催されていましたが、今後は強豪国もそこに「混じる」形となりそうです。W杯アジア予選で弱小国の試合数を増加させる方向へ舵を切ったことと合わせ、AFCの現在のベクトルはこちらを向いているのでしょう。
アジアサッカーの全体観としてこの施策を評価すると意見が分かれそうですが、少なくともJリーグにとってはポジティブと言い難い状況です。プレーオフは最も早い場合で2月10日の開催だそうで、Jリーグ開幕が2月末に前倒しされたとしても、10日以上早くの開幕となるので、この時点でしんどいですね。
加えて言うと、来年はアジアカップの開催年。その決勝戦は1月31日ですから、仮にプレーオフ出場クラブの選手が代表だったとすると、「秋春制移行」どころか「春春制」のシーズンとなってしまいそうです。ちなみに、再来年もリオ五輪予選を兼ねるU-22アジアカップが同時期に開催されるので、あまり状況は変わりません。
2ステージ制とポストシーズン制を導入し、ただでさえ“ぱっつんぱっつん”になってしまったJリーグの日程ですが、ACLの試合数増という新たな難題に直面させられることになりそうです。
