サイ・ゴダードは1997年4月2日生まれの17歳。165cmの小さなプレーメーカーです。父親が英国人で母親が日本人ということ自体は、もはや珍しくも何ともないのですが、英国生まれの英国育ちの選手が「日本代表を選ぶ」となると、なかなか珍しいですよね。
2013年3月のモンテギュー国際大会で「日本代表デビュー」を飾ったゴダードは4月のチッタディグラディスカ国際大会では優勝。8月には豊田国際ユース大会に出場し、「生まれて初めて」という日本で試合をするという経験もしました。そして今年8月にはバツラフ・イェジェク国際ユーストーナメントにU-17日本代表の一員として出場していますので、もう4度も日本代表のユニフォームを着て国際大会に出ていることになります。
今回、彼が日本代表を選ぶことを公言してくれたのは、そうした過程で「日本代表としてプレーしたい！」と思ってもらえたということなのかもしれませんし、だとしたらちょっと嬉しいですね。昨年8月の来日時には僕も取材させてもらったのですが、英語対応でした。選手たちもコミュニケーションは「気合いで」（某選手）やっていたようで、日本にいる彼らにとってもゴダードの存在は良い刺激になったと思います。言葉の通じない選手と一緒にプレーするということは、これからプロになっていく過程できっと経験しなければいけないことですしね。
前に別の場で書いたことがありますが、ゴダードのプレーで一番驚いたのは、彼が「日本人らしい」プレースタイルであること。利他的で、パスが好きで、機動的。僕は日本人らしさというのは多分に後天的、教育的なモノとして養われるものだと思っていたので、ちょっと驚きでした。言葉も通じぬ彼があっさりフィットしてしまったというのも納得です。
1997年生まれは、すなわち東京五輪世代。もしかしたら将来的にはJリーグでプレーするようなこともあるかもしれません。まったく新しい形で出てきたタレントですが、彼のように世界各国の育成年代に「日本人」はいますから、そうしたワールドワイドな人材発掘も今後の日本サッカー界にとって大切な課題のように思います。
