adidas CUP 2014 日本クラブユースサッカー選手権（U-18）大会というたいへんに長い名前の大会です。夏休み、ちょうど総体（インターハイ）と同時期に行われる高校生の大会です。総体が部活の祭典なら、こちらはクラブチームの祭典となります。以前は福島県のJヴィレッジをベースに開催されていましたが、震災後から群馬県をベースとして開催に変わっています。なお、準決勝・決勝は神奈川県横浜市での開催となります。
昨年までは24チームで行われていたこの大会。今年からは8チーム増えて32チームの大会となりました。高校年代のクラブチームは、100チームそこそこしかないので割りと“ぬるい”予選になったようにも思えます。実際にぬるくなった地域もあると思いますが、全部がそういう地域というわけではありません。
今大会は、高円宮杯プレミアリーグに所属する柏レイソル、名古屋グランパス、サンフレッチェ広島といった有力チームが地域予選で姿を消しました。中国地方の2枠をガイナーレ鳥取とファジアーノ岡山が持っていったのが象徴的ですが、地域によっては新たな芽が育ってきていると言えそうです。敗退したチームにとっては悔しさいっぱいの経験だと思いますが、長い目で見れば決してマイナスだけの経験ではないと思います。無風の予選は、育成という点では必ずしもポジティブではないのです。
大会は10日で7試合という、群馬の暑さも手伝ってタフなものです。予選リーグが40分ハーフ、決勝トーナメントは45分ハーフなので、一貫して35分ハーフの総体よりもハードかもしれません（総体は7日で6試合ですが）。
組み合わせ抽選は6月30日。確実に未来のＪリーガーが観られる大会ですので、首都圏にお住まいの方は、三ツ沢開催となる8月1日（金）の準決勝、8月2日（土）の決勝あたりを「観戦予定」の候補に入れてみてはどうでしょうか。
