DF太田宏介（FC東京）とFW小林悠（川崎F）の二人が仲良く代表入りを果たしました。麻布大渕野辺高校（現・麻布大附属高校）サッカー部にとっては大きな快挙ですね。何せ今回の日本代表で二人の選手を送り出している高校年代のチームは、他にFC東京U-18だけですからね（権田修一と武藤嘉紀）。
太田は高校時代、主に左ウイングバック。当時から破壊的な左足を武器にする選手で、彼は2年生の頃には県内で知られた選手でした。選抜チームにも選ばれてそちらでも活躍していますが、J1クラブからオファーが来るほどではなく、当時J2の横浜FCへ加入。そこから清水、FC東京へと籍を移しつつ、スキルアップを果たしてきた選手です。いわゆる“調子乗り世代”として年代別代表のキャリアは持っているものの、主力選手だったわけではなく、2010年に果たしているA代表デビューも、大学生まで含めた若手のみの変則メンバーの中でのデビュー。今回出場するなら、初めての本格A代表デビューとなります。
その同期には小林悠がいて、さらに現・栃木SCのMF小野寺達也もいたわけですから全国的には無名校でしたけれど、実はかなりのタレント集団でした。もう一人、ストライカーにもスペシャルな選手がいましたからね。彼らが2年生、3年生のときに高校選手権も連続出場。全国ではパッとしませんでしたが、ハイレベルなチームだったことは確かです。
小林は当時、主にトップ下でプレーしていました。ゲームメーカーという感じではなく、2列目から飛び出してフィニッシュに絡んでいくようなタイプでしたが。プロからオファーが来るレベルではなく、拓殖大学へ進学。強豪とは言い難いチームですが、逆に過当競争に巻き込まれることなく試合経験を積めたという点と、FWとして目覚めたという2点で彼にとって大学サッカーは大きなターニングポイントだったように思います。しかも3年生のときには水戸の特別指定選手として大学に在学しながらJ2でプレーするという貴重な経験も積み上げました。川崎Fでは負傷を抱えながら加入し、そこから日進月歩だった印象ですが、どうにも「健康運」がなくて代表招集というタイミングで負傷し、縁がありませんでした。今回はケガなく合流してほしいところです。
