西村雄一主審の判定が物議を醸している――と言っても、海外の論調は総じて「ミスだった」というもの。「日本人が大事な開幕戦でやらかしやがった！」というテンションのモノが多そうです。西村さんがどういうキャリアの人かも見ずに「経験不足だった」とか言われると何となく腹も立ちますが、感情論になっても仕方ないので冷静に考えていきましょう。
誤審だったかと言われれば、これは割りとリアルに「微妙なライン」ではないでしょうか。どうしても贔屓目になっている気もしますが、DFの手がフレッジに掛かっているのは確かですから、それを見た（と思われる）西村さんが笛を吹いてしまったのは理解できます。フレッジは「しめた！」という感じで大袈裟に倒れたのでしょうから、騙されたと言えば騙されたと言えます（おのれ、フレッジ……）。
別に開催国の雰囲気に流されたとかではないでしょう。善くも悪くも、そういう「空気を読む」笛を吹くタイプのレフェリーではないと思います。個人的にはPKのシーンよりも、クロアチアの“幻のゴール”になったGKへのファウルを取られたシーンも気になりました。あの距離からあのスピーディーな攻防で笛を吹くのは本当に難しいなと改めて思わされましたが、それを要求されるのがこのレベルのレフェリーとも言えるでしょう。
ちょっと気になるのは西村さんのPK判定が「是」とされた場合です。日本のCB陣は手を使ってしまうクセが付いている選手が多いので（これは選ばれた選手に限らず、日本のDF全体の課題です）、ちょっと嫌な可能性が思い浮かんでしまいます。
